CHAMORRO: This name was given to the language and people of the Marianas chain. It is not known where the language originated from nor where the Chamorro people originally came from because there are no written information about them and their language prior to the work of Father San Vitores in 1668. The Chamorro language, however, is a member of the Austronesian family of languages and it is known by linguists that it is not a dialect of another language nor is it a language borrowed from the culture of another people. The Chamorros live in the islands of Sa'ipan, Luta, Tini'an, Pagan, Anatahan and Alamagan and aside from eventual migration to other places in search of their livelihood, the Chamorros are uniquely found in these chain of islands. Research has shown that the original Chamorros belong to the large group of Pacific peoples known generally as Malayo- Polynesisan. Writer/researcher Laura Thompson mentions that the
Chamorros were the descendants of seafaring people who came
from Asia and traveled to the Philippines, the Western
Caroline Islands and eventually ended in the Marianas.
Another research work conducted at Chalan Pi'ao in Sa'ipan
and disclosed by Spoehr in 1954:38 indicated that the first
inhabitants of the Marianas came about three thousand five
hundred years ago. CHAMURU: |
